Chess and other games are played throughout the week at the coffee shop. // Leah Thompson/Staff It’s nearly 3 p.m. on a Wednesday, and several regulars are seated around at tables inside South Side Coffee Company. At one table, four men in their 60s, each with a mug of coffee or tea, talk quietly, laughing often. They appear to be retired colleagues. Several local newspapers cover the center of their table, and they can be heard discussing the planned launch of a Taurus XL rocket, already delayed once this particular week. At another table, two women — one much louder than the other — hold an animated conversation, jumping from topic to topic. Nearby, another woman reads quietly, books stacked at her table. The way she’s settled in indicates she’s been here for hours. At the rear of the coffeehouse, a lone man works on a laptop. Music by the Beatles hangs in the air, accompanied by the intermittent sound of the espresso machine. Well-used tile and iron tables and several chairs line the brick sidewalk in front of the coffeehouse, but the day is chilly and everyone’s inside. This afternoon is a typical one at South Side. Customers come and go. Regulars like Bob Manning, owner with his wife, Sue, of Sue’s Place, just across H Street, come in often. “Every weekday, just about 4 p.m.,” he said with a smile, and leaves with two hot drinks. For most of those who frequent South Side, longtime owner Julie Biolley is as well known as her business, which is considered by many a Lompoc institution. For Biolley has molded South Side into a coffeehouse representative of both large cities and small towns: It’s got something for everybody. There’s live music on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings of each month, moderated by Bill Carlsen, and a live mic session on the second Friday, Biolley said. On Sunday mornings, there’s smooth jazz guitar music. A film club offers movies every Thursday evening, Biolley said. Other regular events include a discussion of the book “The Four Agreements,” led by Gary van Warmerdam, on the first Wednesday of each month. All of South Side’s events are listed on its Facebook page, Biolley said. In 1994, Biolley teamed with a business partner to open South Side, but since buying out her partner six years ago, she’s been sole proprietor of the South H Street location. The Rudolph building location, which formerly housed the Stalkers’ Men’s Wear clothing store, took months to overhaul and remodel, Biolley said. In addition to scheduling her current staff of nine, a “really nice crew,” paying the bills and scheduling South Side’s music shows, Biolley works behind the counter between 20 and 30 hours each week, she said. Her husband, James, is a house painter and artist, and some of his work hangs on the walls at South Side. Jim and Julie Biolley have three children — two of them, now 23 and 29, “both did work here at one time or another” over the years; another child died in 2006, Biolley said. The couple also has four grandchildren. A native of Whittier, Calif., Biolley said she grew up in Santa Barbara, attended Dos Pueblos High School and moved to Lompoc in 1987. The coffee she buys for South Side comes from Goleta-based Caribbean Coffee, a longtime South Coast business, and is a favorite of her regular customers, she noted. In a week’s time, Biolley and her crew serve “a couple hundred” coffee and espresso drinks to regulars, local residents and business people. Weekends bring a different clientele, she said. “On holidays and weekends, we get travelers in addition to regulars, and lots of cyclists, and Jalama Beach campers.” South Side opens for business at 6 a.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. weekends, and closes at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. During those hours, the change in the clientele is distinct, Biolley said. “The morning crowd is very different than the evening crowd.” Early in the day on weekdays, a group of “ex-mayors of Lompoc” frequents South Side, Biolley said. On any given day, topics under discussion may center on conservative politics, and at other points in time, both the faces and the topics ebb and flow. “It’s never boring in here, since the people keep it interesting,” Biolley smiled. The sense of community a local coffeehouse creates is apparent in South Side’s efforts to care for clientele and employees alike. Crew member Todd La Pointe was severely injured in a fall last summer, and in July, and his sister, Angela La Pointe, turned her own CD release party into a fundraising concert (“Toddstock”) to benefit her brother. After nearly 17 years preparing and serving coffee, Biolley admits she “knows lots and lots of people by their drinks. I have years and years’ worth of customers” in here. Like coffeehouses across the nation, South Side is a haven for musicians and artists trying to open doors to fame. Biolley has hosted benefits, concerts, artists’ openings and shows, as well as funerals, weddings and graduation parties, she said. Artists are reserved by the month, and currently South Side is booked nearly one year in advance, she added. Biolley’s constant interaction with the community, she said, has taught her to “appreciate what a variety of people there are in our community.” Laurie Jervis is a freelance writer, editor and viticulture student, and can be reached at winecountrywriter@gmail.com South Side Coffee * South Side CoffeeCompany, 105 South H St., Lompoc.
